Immigration Officer Suspended for Alleged Bribery

An Assistant Superintendent of Immigration II (ASI II), Okpravero Ufuoma, has been suspended by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) for allegedly soliciting financial gratification from a traveler.

According to a statement from the Service, Kenneth Udo, a spokesman, expressed that the officer’s behaviour, which was recorded in a video circulating on social media, does not align with the high standards of professionalism upheld by the NIS.

Udo reported that the service received a viral video with the caption, ‘This is how immigration officers treat tourists in Nigeria’.

The Comptroller General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap, strongly condemned the alleged misconduct, stating that it undermines the ongoing reforms aimed at enhancing service standards.

She, however, reassured the public that the officer has been indefinitely suspended pending the outcome of disciplinary procedures, in accordance with the law and Public Service Rules.

Nandap emphasised that the officer’s behaviour is shameful and does not reflect the service’s dedication to providing hospitality, reception, and courtesy.
